A managed VPS is the other well-trodden route for Umbraco sites, and the one to pick when you need the site in a UK data centre you can name, want to run your own SQL Server or SQLite database, or already have a .NET deployment pipeline you'd rather keep. The server is yours: the .NET runtime, IIS or Kestrel behind a reverse proxy, and the database, all set up and patched by our UK team.
Costs are the difference most people notice. Umbraco Cloud pricing scales with plan tier and environments. A VPS is a fixed monthly figure, and a second or third Umbraco site can share the same server if it has the headroom.
What the Umbraco VPS includes
We provision the supported .NET runtime for your Umbraco version, the database engine the project uses, SSL, and a firewall. Backups run automatically and are stored off-site. Monitoring watches the site and the server, and the support team investigates anything unusual rather than waiting for you to notice.
Deploying is your choice of tool. Publish from Visual Studio, push from Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions, or copy a build over. Umbraco's own uSync and Deploy packages work as normal because nothing about the server is unusual.

Moving an Umbraco site or project
Moving Umbraco is the published site, the media folder and the database, plus any custom packages the project uses. We rebuild it on the new VPS, you check the back office, a content publish and a media upload, and then DNS moves. Migrations from Umbraco Cloud, Azure App Service or another host are free.
We'll be straight about one thing: Umbraco needs more from a server than a PHP CMS, so the entry VPS is a starting point for a small site. We size the plan on the version of Umbraco, the media library and the traffic before you order, so the number you see is the number you pay.
SQL Server hosting in the UK, for Umbraco and everything else on .NET
Umbraco is the usual reason people ask us for SQL Server hosting, but the server we build for it is a general Microsoft SQL Server host: a managed UK VPS running SQL Server Express for most sites, or a licensed Standard edition where the database outgrows Express's limits, with the .NET runtime alongside it. That suits any .NET application that needs a hosted SQL Server database, not just Umbraco.
The database sits on NVMe storage with guaranteed cores and RAM, is backed up off-site, and is reachable from your application on the same server or, on request, from a whitelisted external IP for a client's line-of-business app. We size the plan on the database size and the query load before you order, and we're straight about the Express edition limits (10 GB per database, one CPU socket and limited memory) so you know when Standard is the honest recommendation.

How long does an Umbraco setup take?
